Celebrating Gatherings with Art and Culture: A Day to Remember

On November 7, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, I had the incredible opportunity to facilitate a day of gathering and cultural sharing at the Milwaukee Art Museum for the Free Day + Celebration: Gatherings event. Located at 700 N Art Museum Dr, Milwaukee, WI, this event brought together people of all ages to celebrate the beauty of gathering—whether in quiet reflection or joyful festivity. Families and friends came to connect through art, music, movement, and other engaging activities.

In the Milwaukee Room, I had the honor of guiding participants in creating corn husk flowers, a meaningful craft deeply rooted in Oneida heritage. Over the course of the day, I led more than 15 sessions, helping attendees weave beautiful corn husk flowers by hand. At times, we worked in small, intimate groups of three or four, fostering conversations and a sense of personal connection. Other times, the room was full, with over a dozen people creating together, filling the space with energy and shared purpose.

As we crafted, I shared stories of the Oneida Nation and the significance of traditional arts. For many, this was a first experience not only with corn husk flower making but also with the broader richness of Oneida craftsmanship and culture. Together, we explored how vital it is to preserve these skills and pass down cultural knowledge, ensuring that our heritage remains alive and accessible for future generations.

In addition to corn husk flower making, visitors were invited to explore a display featuring some of my own traditional works: beadwork, quillwork, baskets, and other items central to Oneida culture. Many people stopped to admire the craftsmanship and ask questions, creating a meaningful exchange and a deeper appreciation for the heritage that these works represent.

By the end of the day, I was overwhelmed by the community's interest and participation. This event was more than an opportunity to create art; it was a space where people gathered to connect, reflect, and celebrate the strength of cultural knowledge. I’m grateful to everyone who joined us, and I look forward to seeing the seeds of curiosity and respect for the Oneida Nation continue to grow.

Thank you to everyone who came to learn, create, and gather!
